Department of
Identity Formation
Documentation and Academic Structure of the Department
The Department of Identity Formation examines how a human being comes to know and hold a coherent sense of self — who they are, across time, across relationship, and under pressure to become someone else.
Where the Department of Character Studies holds the theory of durable conduct and the Department of Human Development holds the theory of formation’s timing, the Department of Identity Formation holds the theory of the self that persists across both: the continuous subject who has a character, who develops, and who must recognize itself as the same person doing so.
This document establishes the Department’s complete academic and institutional documentation architecture across seven structural layers.
Foundational Framework
Governing Field. Human Formation, examined through the specific lens of Identity Formation — the systematic study of how a coherent sense of self is established, tested, revised, and preserved across a human life.
Central Premise. A person does not simply have an identity the way they have a name. Identity is formed — built through affirmation, challenge, relationship, and reflection — and it can be strengthened, confused, captured, or lost. The Department studies the conditions under which identity forms in health, and the conditions under which it is distorted or displaced.
Foundational Theoretical Anchor. The Department operates under the General Theory of Human Formation held by the Department of Human Formation. It maintains close coordination with the Department of Consciousness Studies (the aware subject) and the Department of Character Studies (the durable pattern that subject develops), and with the Relational Human Formation research programme, whose Theory of Relational Self-Loss and concept of Relational Identity Capture directly extend this Department’s own theoretical territory into the relational domain.
Programme List
The Department offers a complete academic ladder from foundational study through doctoral research.
Delivery Framework
The Department is delivered online-first, using structured cohort-based study supported by Module Specifications, Study Guides, Teaching Manuals, and Assessment Briefs for every unit, consistent with the Institute’s established production standard.
Curriculum
The BA (Honours) Identity Formation Studies curriculum proceeds across four levels, numbered ID101 through ID111, following the Institute’s core pedagogical standard: scaffolded progression from structured instruction toward fully independent identity formation research.
| Level | Focus | Modules |
|---|---|---|
| Level 4 | Foundations of Identity Formation; the continuity–change distinction; introduction to selfhood theory | ID101–ID104 |
| Level 5 | Identity under relational and institutional pressure; comparative identity systems; identity capture and its recovery | ID105–ID107 |
| Level 6 | Independent identity research; capstone case study; specialization electives | ID108–ID109 |
| Level 7 (MA) | Advanced theory of identity and formation; research methods; dissertation | ID110–ID111 |
Key Pedagogical Standard. Every module moves the learner from structured instruction toward the independent capacity to examine their own identity formation and recognize when it is being strengthened or captured — no learner exits the programme still dependent on external structure to hold a coherent sense of self.
Research Fields and Centres
The Department maintains the following primary research fields:
Centre for Identity Formation Studies
The Department’s standing research centre, coordinating cross-domain research with the Department of Human Formation, the Department of Character Studies, and the Relational Human Formation research programme’s work on Relational Self-Loss and Identity Capture.
Assessment and Ethics
Assessment in the Department combines theoretical evaluation with disciplined first-person case study, examined for accuracy of observation and rigour of analysis — never for whether a learner’s own identity conforms to any particular template the Department might be presumed to favour.
Because the Department’s subject matter is the learner’s own sense of self, its ethics requirements exceed the Institute’s general standard.
Award Titles
Public-Facing Department Page
The Department of Identity Formation is where the Institute studies how a coherent sense of self is built, tested, and preserved — the continuous subject who has a character, who develops across a lifespan, and who must recognize itself as the same person doing so. As a founding Department of Faculty I, it examines both the health and the distortion of that process.
Learners join a structured academic pathway from Certificate through PhD, moving from guided foundational study toward independent identity research, supported at every level by the Institute’s full documentation standard: Module Specifications, Study Guides, Teaching Manuals, and Assessment Briefs.

Credit Framework
The Department applies the Institute’s standard credit framework: one credit represents approximately 10 notional learning hours, inclusive of guided instruction, independent study, identity formation practicum where applicable, and assessment.
| Level | Credits (Full Level) | Notional Learning Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Level 4 (Certificate/Year 1) | 120 | 1,200 |
| Level 5 (Diploma/Year 2) | 120 | 1,200 |

| Level 8 (MPhil/PhD, research credit) | 240–360 | 2,400–3,600 |
Identity Formation Ethics Principle
Because the Department’s central subject matter is the learner’s own sense of self, its ethical commitments govern every module, practicum, and research activity it authorizes.
This principle governs curriculum design, identity formation practicum supervision, assessment of first-person case study, and all research involving human participants across the Department, and stands alongside the Formation Safeguarding Principle (Department of Human Formation), the Interior Life Protection Principle (Department of Consciousness Studies), the Non-Judgment Principle (Department of Character Studies), and the Developmental Vulnerability Principle (Department of Human Development) as one of the Institute’s foundational protections for the persons it forms.
Tuition Principle
Tuition for every programme is published in full above, with no undisclosed fees. Where a learner’s circumstances warrant it, the Department may offer needs-based tuition adjustment, cohort scholarships, or staged payment plans, at the discretion of the Institute’s admissions and finance offices.
Tuition figures reflect the Institute’s standard credit-based tuition model and are reviewed annually.
Final Delivery and Access Declaration
The Department of Identity Formation is delivered online-first to maximize access for learners regardless of geographic location, with structured cohort support, complete documentation for every module, and a clear pathway from Certificate through PhD. No learner shall be required to relocate to access any taught programme offered by this Department.
Final Structural Declaration
The Department of Identity Formation stands as a founding Department of Faculty I, holding the theory of the continuous self that persists across consciousness, character, and development. Every award, module, and research activity documented above proceeds through the Department’s permanent structural chain:
This chain governs the Department of Identity Formation now and permanently, coordinated with, and answerable to, the general theory of Human Formation held by the Department of Human Formation.
