Department of
Human Formation
Documentation and Academic Structure of the Department
The Department of Human Formation is the foundational academic home of Faculty I and the coordinating centre of the Institute’s governing field. Every specialized domain of Human Formation — including Symbolic Human Formation and Relational Human Formation — draws its constitutional and theoretical legitimacy from the general theory of Human Formation this Department maintains.
This document establishes the Department’s complete academic and institutional documentation architecture across seven structural layers.
Foundational Framework
Governing Field. Human Formation — the systematic study of how human beings are shaped, not merely informed, across the whole of a life: in identity, character, consciousness, relationship, vocation, and community.
Central Premise. A human being is not fully described by what they know. Formation names everything that happens beyond information — the shaping of character, the maturing of judgment, the deepening of identity — and the Department exists to study that process directly, rather than treating it as an incidental by-product of other disciplines.
Foundational Theoretical Anchor. The General Theory of Human Formation, developed and maintained by this Department, provides the theoretical foundation from which every specialized domain within the Institute proceeds. Symbolic Human Formation studies formation through symbols; Relational Human Formation studies formation through relationship; both remain answerable to the general theory this Department holds.
Programme List
The Department offers a complete academic ladder from foundational study through doctoral research.
Delivery Framework
The Department is delivered online-first, using structured cohort-based study supported by Module Specifications, Study Guides, Teaching Manuals, and Assessment Briefs for every unit, consistent with the Institute’s established production standard.
Curriculum
The BA (Honours) Human Formation Studies curriculum proceeds across four levels, numbered HF101 through HF111, following the Institute’s core pedagogical standard: scaffolded progression from structured instruction toward fully independent work.
| Level | Focus | Modules |
|---|---|---|
| Level 4 | Foundations of Human Formation; establishes the descriptive–normative distinction as a central intellectual contribution | HF101–HF104 |
| Level 5 | Formation across domains of identity, character, and relationship; comparative formation systems | HF105–HF107 |
| Level 6 | Independent formation research; capstone reflective practice; specialization electives | HF108–HF109 |
| Level 7 (MA) | Advanced formation theory; research methods; dissertation | HF110–HF111 |
Key Pedagogical Standard. Every module is built to move the learner from structured instruction toward fully independent formation practice — no learner exits the programme still dependent on external structure for their own reflective work.
Research Fields and Centres
The Department maintains the following primary research fields:
Centre for Human Formation Studies
The Department’s standing research centre, coordinating cross-domain research with the Centre for Symbolic Formation Science (Faculty VIII/IX) and the developing Relational Human Formation research programme (Faculty I, provisional Department 9).
Assessment and Ethics
Assessment throughout the Department is built on the descriptive–normative distinction established at Level 4: learners are assessed on their ability to accurately describe formative processes before they are assessed on normative judgments about how formation ought to proceed.
Because the Department’s subject matter is the shaping of persons, its ethics requirements exceed the Institute’s general standard.
Award Titles
Public-Facing Department Page
The Department of Human Formation is where the Institute studies what it means for a human being to be formed — shaped in identity, character, consciousness, and relationship — across the whole of life. As the coordinating Department of Faculty I, it holds the general theory from which every specialized domain of Human Formation, including Symbolic Human Formation and Relational Human Formation, proceeds.
Learners join a structured academic pathway from Certificate through PhD, moving from guided foundational study toward independent formation research, supported at every level by the Institute’s full documentation standard: Module Specifications, Study Guides, Teaching Manuals, and Assessment Briefs.

| Level | Credits (Full Level) | Notional Learning Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Level 4 (Certificate/Year 1) | 120 | 1,200 |
| Level 5 (Diploma/Year 2) | 120 | 1,200 |

| Level 8 (MPhil/PhD, research credit) | 240–360 | 2,400–3,600 |
Formation Safeguarding and Ethics Principle
Because the Department’s central subject matter is the formation of human persons, its ethical commitments are foundational to every programme, module, and research activity it authorizes.
This principle governs curriculum design, formation practicum supervision, assessment of reflective work, and all research involving human participants across the Department, and is the constitutional root from which the Codes of Professional and Ethical Practice of the Institute’s specialized domains (Symbolic Human Formation, Relational Human Formation) descend.
Tuition Principle
Tuition for every programme is published in full above, with no undisclosed fees. Where a learner’s circumstances warrant it, the Department may offer needs-based tuition adjustment, cohort scholarships, or staged payment plans, at the discretion of the Institute’s admissions and finance offices.
Tuition figures reflect the Institute’s standard credit-based tuition model and are reviewed annually.
Final Delivery and Access Declaration
The Department of Human Formation is delivered online-first to maximize access for learners regardless of geographic location, with structured cohort support, complete documentation for every module, and a clear pathway from Certificate through PhD. No learner shall be required to relocate to access any taught programme offered by this Department.
Final Structural Declaration
The Department of Human Formation stands as the foundational coordinating Department of Faculty I and of the CYTOG HUMAN FORMATION AND LEARNING as a whole. Every award, module, and research activity documented above proceeds through the Department’s permanent structural chain:
This chain governs the Department of Human Formation now and permanently, and is the structural root from which the specialized domains of Symbolic Human Formation and Relational Human Formation derive their own parallel chains.
