Section I

Documentation and Academic Structure of the Department

The Department of Ethics examines what a person and an institution owe to one another and to those affected by their action — the systematic study of obligation, value, and right conduct, and the disciplined evaluation of what formation, in any domain, ought to require.

Where the Department of Philosophy holds the general disciplines of reasoning, the Department of Ethics applies those disciplines to a specific and urgent question that every other Department of the Institute eventually faces in practice: not only what is true, but what is owed, and to whom.

This document establishes the Department’s complete academic and institutional documentation architecture across seven structural layers.

Field → Department → Programme → Curriculum → Module → Assessment → Research → Formation Practice → Award → Graduate

Stage One · Foundational Framework

Section II

Foundational Framework

Governing Field. Human Formation, examined through the discipline of Ethics — the systematic study of obligation, value, right conduct, and the standards by which formative practice across the Institute is itself evaluated.

Central Premise. Every Department of this Institute makes claims about what formation should do to, and for, a human being. Ethics studies the standard those claims must meet: what one person may rightly ask, require, or withhold from another, and what obligations formation itself creates once it begins to shape a life.

Foundational Theoretical Anchor. The Department operates under the Principle of Charitable and Honest Argument established by the Department of Philosophy, the founding Department of Faculty II, and applies that same disciplined reasoning to questions of obligation and value specifically. It coordinates closely with every Department across the Institute whose own named ethics principle (from the Formation Safeguarding Principle onward) this Department’s research helps to justify and refine.

EVERY CLAIM THAT FORMATION SHOULD DO SOMETHING TO A PERSON IS, WHETHER NAMED OR NOT, AN ETHICAL CLAIM.

Stage Two · Programme List

Section III

Programme List

The Department offers a complete academic ladder from foundational study through doctoral research.

Diploma in Ethics
BA (Honours) Ethics
Postgraduate Certificate in Ethics
Postgraduate Diploma in Ethics
MA Ethics
MRes Ethics
MPhil Ethics
PhD Ethics
Professional Practice Certificate in Applied Ethics and Institutional Ethics Advisory

Stage Three · Delivery Framework

Section IV

Delivery Framework

The Department is delivered online-first, using structured cohort-based study supported by Module Specifications, Study Guides, Teaching Manuals, and Assessment Briefs for every unit, consistent with the Institute’s established production standard.

Structured Instruction
Levels 4–5 establish foundational vocabulary and method in normative theory, value, and obligation.

Scaffolded Independence
Levels 6–7 progressively require independent applied ethics research and institutional case analysis.

Cohort-Based Study
Learners progress in structured cohorts, supporting seminar-style dialogue across competing ethical frameworks.

Distance and Blended Access
All programmes are available by distance; the Professional Practice Certificate includes supervised practicum in institutional ethics advisory.

Stage Four · Curriculum

Section V

Curriculum

The BA (Honours) Ethics curriculum proceeds across four levels, numbered ET101 through ET111, following the Institute’s core pedagogical standard: scaffolded progression from structured instruction toward fully independent ethical reasoning and applied analysis.

Level Focus Modules
Level 4 Foundations of Ethics; the description–prescription distinction; introduction to normative theory ET101–ET104
Level 5 Comparative ethical traditions; applied ethics across professional and institutional contexts; the ethics of formation itself ET105–ET107
Level 6 Independent applied ethics research; capstone institutional case study; specialization electives ET108–ET109
Level 7 (MA) Advanced normative theory; ethics advisory practice; research methods; dissertation ET110–ET111

Key Pedagogical Standard. Every module moves the learner from structured instruction toward the independent capacity to identify and reason through a genuine ethical dilemma without collapsing it into either easy relativism or rigid rule-following — no learner exits the programme unable to give a reasoned account of a difficult ethical judgment.

Stage Five · Research Fields and Centres

Section VI

Research Fields and Centres

The Department maintains the following primary research fields:

Normative Theory and Comparative Ethical Traditions
Applied Ethics in Professional and Institutional Contexts
The Ethics of Human Formation Itself (joint with Faculty I)
Metaethics and Practical Reasoning (joint with Department of Philosophy)
Institutional Ethics Advisory and Governance
Research Ethics Standards Across the Institute (joint with Faculty IX)
Comparative Religious and Theological Ethics (joint with Faculty VII)
Ethics of Symbolic and Relational Formation (joint with the Symbolic and Relational Human Formation Canons)

Centre for Ethics and Institutional Governance

The Department’s standing research centre, coordinating cross-domain research with the Department of Philosophy, the Department of Human Formation (Faculty I), and the ethics-review bodies referenced across every Department’s own ethics principle documented to date.

Stage Six · Assessment and Ethics

Section VII

Assessment and Ethics

Assessment in the Department evaluates the rigour and coherence of a learner’s ethical reasoning — never a grading of the learner’s personal moral character, and never a requirement that the learner adopt a particular ethical framework as a condition of academic success.

Because the Department both studies and is itself subject to ethical standards, it applies a dedicated integrity principle to its own institutional role.

THE PRINCIPLE OF ETHICAL COHERENCE: this Department shall never require of any other Department, programme, or practitioner an ethical standard it does not itself meet. Where this Department serves in an advisory capacity to another Department’s ethics review, its recommendations shall be reasoned and documented, never issued as unexplained authority. No learner shall be penalized for identifying a genuine inconsistency between this Department’s own stated standards and its practice.

Public-Facing Department Page

The Department of Ethics is where the Institute studies what one person owes another, and what obligations formation itself creates once it begins to shape a life. As a sibling Department of Faculty II, it applies the disciplines of reasoning established by the Department of Philosophy to the specific, urgent question of right conduct.

Learners join a structured academic pathway from Certificate through PhD, moving from guided foundational study toward independent applied ethics research, supported at every level by the Institute’s full documentation standard: Module Specifications, Study Guides, Teaching Manuals, and Assessment Briefs.

Level 8 (MPhil/PhD, research credit) 240–360 2,400–3,600

Section XXVI

Ethical Coherence Principle

Because this Department both teaches and is itself institutionally relied upon to evaluate ethical standards across the Institute, its own commitments govern every module, advisory engagement, and research activity it authorizes.

THE PRINCIPLE OF ETHICAL COHERENCE (restated as governing Department ethic): a Department of Ethics that does not hold itself to its own standard has nothing to teach. Every standard this Department asks of others, it applies first and most strictly to its own practice.

This principle governs curriculum design, institutional ethics advisory practicum, assessment design, and all research conducted across the Department, and stands alongside the Principle of Charitable and Honest Argument (Department of Philosophy) as one of the two founding ethics principles of Faculty II, cross-referenced by the Faculty’s remaining Departments as they are documented.

Section XXVII

Tuition Principle

Tuition for every programme is published in full above, with no undisclosed fees. Where a learner’s circumstances warrant it, the Department may offer needs-based tuition adjustment, cohort scholarships, or staged payment plans, at the discretion of the Institute’s admissions and finance offices.

Tuition figures reflect the Institute’s standard credit-based tuition model and are reviewed annually.

Section XXVIII

Final Delivery and Access Declaration

The Department of Ethics is delivered online-first to maximize access for learners regardless of geographic location, with structured cohort support, complete documentation for every module, and a clear pathway from Certificate through PhD. No learner shall be required to relocate to access any taught programme offered by this Department.

Section XXIX

Final Structural Declaration

The Department of Ethics stands as a founding Department of Faculty II, holding the standard of obligation and right conduct against which the Institute’s own formative practice is measured. Every award, module, and research activity documented above proceeds through the Department’s permanent structural chain:

Field → Department → Programme → Curriculum → Module → Assessment → Research → Formation Practice → Award → Graduate

This chain governs the Department of Ethics now and permanently, coordinated with, and answerable to, the disciplines of reasoning held by the Department of Philosophy.
