Department of
Epistemology
Documentation and Academic Structure of the Department
The Department of Epistemology examines what it means for a belief to be justified — not merely held, not merely sincere, but actually entitled to the confidence with which it is asserted. It studies knowledge itself: what it is, how it is acquired, and what distinguishes a knowledge claim from an opinion dressed as one.
Where the Department of Logic studies whether a conclusion validly follows from its premises, the Department of Epistemology studies a prior question: whether the premises themselves deserve to be believed in the first place. Every claim made across every Department of the Institute — about formation, about symbols, about relationships — ultimately rests on an epistemic foundation this Department studies directly.
This document establishes the Department’s complete academic and institutional documentation architecture across seven structural layers.
Foundational Framework
Governing Field. Human Formation, examined through the discipline of Epistemology — the systematic study of knowledge, justified belief, and the standards by which a claim earns the right to be asserted with confidence.
Central Premise. Sincerity is not justification. A person may believe something with total conviction and still be wrong, because conviction is a fact about the believer, not evidence about the world. The Department studies the gap between feeling certain and being entitled to certainty, and the disciplined methods by which that gap can be narrowed.
Foundational Theoretical Anchor. The Department operates under the Principle of Charitable and Honest Argument established by the Department of Philosophy, and coordinates closely with the Department of Logic (valid inference from justified premises) and the Department of Research Methodology (Faculty IX), whose empirical standards this Department’s epistemic theory underwrites. It also examines the specific epistemic status of Symbolic and Relational Human Formation’s own emerging research claims.
Programme List
The Department offers a complete academic ladder from foundational study through doctoral research.
Delivery Framework
The Department is delivered online-first, using structured cohort-based study supported by Module Specifications, Study Guides, Teaching Manuals, and Assessment Briefs for every unit, consistent with the Institute’s established production standard.
Curriculum
The BA (Honours) Epistemology curriculum proceeds across four levels, numbered EP101 through EP111, following the Institute’s core pedagogical standard: scaffolded progression from structured instruction toward fully independent epistemic evaluation.
| Level | Focus | Modules |
|---|---|---|
| Level 4 | Foundations of Epistemology; the belief–knowledge distinction; sources and limits of justification | EP101–EP104 |
| Level 5 | Testimony, authority, and evidence; comparative epistemic traditions; epistemic humility and overconfidence | EP105–EP107 |
| Level 6 | Independent epistemic evaluation research; capstone applied critical analysis; specialization electives | EP108–EP109 |
| Level 7 (MA) | Advanced epistemology; epistemic standards for emerging research fields; research methods; dissertation | EP110–EP111 |
Key Pedagogical Standard. Every module moves the learner from structured instruction toward the independent capacity to ask, of any claim including their own, what actually justifies it — no learner exits the programme still mistaking the strength of a feeling for the strength of the evidence behind it.
Research Fields and Centres
The Department maintains the following primary research fields:
Centre for Epistemology and Critical Inquiry
The Department’s standing research centre, coordinating cross-domain research with the Department of Philosophy, the Department of Logic, and the Department of Research Methodology (Faculty IX).
Assessment and Ethics
Assessment in the Department evaluates a learner’s capacity to identify what actually justifies a claim and to honestly state the limits of that justification — never a reward for false certainty presented confidently, and never a penalty for well-reasoned, disclosed uncertainty.
Because epistemic authority can be misused to demand belief without justification, the Department applies a dedicated integrity principle.
Award Titles
Public-Facing Department Page
The Department of Epistemology is where the Institute studies what it means for a belief to be justified — the gap between feeling certain and being entitled to certainty, and the disciplined methods that narrow it. As a sibling Department of Faculty II, it examines the epistemic foundation every other Department’s claims ultimately rest upon.
Learners join a structured academic pathway from Certificate through PhD, moving from guided foundational study toward independent epistemic evaluation, supported at every level by the Institute’s full documentation standard: Module Specifications, Study Guides, Teaching Manuals, and Assessment Briefs.

Credit Framework
The Department applies the Institute’s standard credit framework: one credit represents approximately 10 notional learning hours, inclusive of guided instruction, independent study, critical literacy practicum where applicable, and assessment.
| Level | Credits (Full Level) | Notional Learning Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Level 4 (Certificate/Year 1) | 120 | 1,200 |
| Level 5 (Diploma/Year 2) | 120 | 1,200 |
| Level 6 (BA Year 3 / Honours Year) | 120–240 | 1,200–2,400 |

| Level 8 (MPhil/PhD, research credit) | 240–360 | 2,400–3,600 |
Epistemic Integrity Ethics Principle
Because epistemic authority itself can be misused to demand deference without earning it, the Department’s ethical commitments govern every module, practicum, and research activity it authorizes.
This principle governs curriculum design, critical literacy practicum, assessment design, and all research conducted across the Department, and stands alongside the Principle of Charitable and Honest Argument (Department of Philosophy), the Principle of Ethical Coherence (Department of Ethics), and the Principle of Non-Weaponized Reasoning (Department of Logic) as the fourth founding ethics principle of Faculty II.
Tuition Principle
Tuition for every programme is published in full above, with no undisclosed fees. Where a learner’s circumstances warrant it, the Department may offer needs-based tuition adjustment, cohort scholarships, or staged payment plans, at the discretion of the Institute’s admissions and finance offices.
Tuition figures reflect the Institute’s standard credit-based tuition model and are reviewed annually.
Final Delivery and Access Declaration
The Department of Epistemology is delivered online-first to maximize access for learners regardless of geographic location, with structured cohort support, complete documentation for every module, and a clear pathway from Certificate through PhD. No learner shall be required to relocate to access any taught programme offered by this Department.
Final Structural Declaration
The Department of Epistemology stands as a founding Department of Faculty II, holding the standard of justification that every knowledge claim across the Institute, including its own, must meet. Every award, module, and research activity documented above proceeds through the Department’s permanent structural chain:
This chain governs the Department of Epistemology now and permanently, coordinated with, and answerable to, the Principle of Charitable and Honest Argument held by the Department of Philosophy.
