Consciousness Studies
Documentation and Academic Structure of the Department
The Department of Consciousness Studies examines the interior life of the human person: awareness, self-awareness, reflective capacity, attention, and the developing consciousness through which every other act of formation is actually experienced and directed.
Formation cannot occur in a subject incapable of awareness. Where the Department of Human Formation holds the general theory of formation, the Department of Consciousness Studies holds the theory of the conscious subject who is formed — without which formation would describe behaviour without describing the one who lives it.
This document establishes the Department’s complete academic and institutional documentation architecture across seven structural layers.
Foundational Framework
Governing Field. Human Formation, examined through the specific lens of Consciousness Studies — the systematic study of awareness, self-awareness, attention, and reflective capacity as they develop and mature across a human life.
Central Premise. A person’s capacity to be formed is bounded by their capacity to be aware — of themselves, of their patterns, of what a formative moment is actually offering them. Consciousness is therefore not incidental to formation; it is the very medium through which formation becomes possible at all.
Foundational Theoretical Anchor. The Department operates under the General Theory of Human Formation held by the Department of Human Formation, while developing its own specialized theoretical architecture concerning awareness, reflective capacity, and the structures of conscious experience. It maintains close coordination with Faculty III’s Department of Cognitive Science (the mechanics of cognition) and Faculty VIII’s Department of Symbolic Human Formation and Comparative Symbolic Systems (Symbolic Consciousness Theory).
Programme List
The Department offers a complete academic ladder from foundational study through doctoral research.
Delivery Framework
The Department is delivered online-first, using structured cohort-based study supported by Module Specifications, Study Guides, Teaching Manuals, and Assessment Briefs for every unit, consistent with the Institute’s established production standard.
Curriculum
The BA (Honours) Consciousness Studies curriculum proceeds across four levels, numbered CS101 through CS111, following the Institute’s core pedagogical standard: scaffolded progression from structured instruction toward fully independent reflective work.
| Level | Focus | Modules |
|---|---|---|
| Level 4 | Foundations of Consciousness Studies; the awareness–attention distinction; introduction to reflective method | CS101–CS104 |
| Level 5 | States and structures of consciousness; comparative contemplative and reflective traditions; consciousness and character | CS105–CS107 |
| Level 6 | Independent reflective research; capstone first-person study; specialization electives | CS108–CS109 |
| Level 7 (MA) | Advanced theory of consciousness and formation; research methods; dissertation | CS110–CS111 |
Key Pedagogical Standard. Every module moves the learner from structured instruction toward the independent capacity to observe, examine, and responsibly interpret their own conscious experience — no learner exits the programme still dependent on external structure for reflective work.
Research Fields and Centres
The Department maintains the following primary research fields:
Centre for Consciousness and Reflective Studies
The Department’s standing research centre, coordinating cross-domain research with the Department of Human Formation, the Department of Cognitive Science (Faculty III), and the Centre for Symbolic Formation Science (Faculty VIII/IX).
Assessment and Ethics
Assessment in the Department combines conventional theoretical evaluation with disciplined first-person reflective work, examined for accuracy of observation, clarity of self-report, and responsible interpretation rather than for any particular conclusion a learner reaches about their own experience.
Because the Department’s methods involve sustained introspective and contemplative practice, its ethics requirements exceed the Institute’s general standard.
Award Titles
Public-Facing Department Page
The Department of Consciousness Studies is where the Institute studies the interior life of the human person — awareness, self-awareness, attention, and the reflective capacity through which formation is actually experienced and directed. As a founding Department of Faculty I, it examines the conscious subject presupposed by every other act of Human Formation.
Learners join a structured academic pathway from Certificate through PhD, moving from guided foundational study toward independent, disciplined reflective research, supported at every level by the Institute’s full documentation standard: Module Specifications, Study Guides, Teaching Manuals, and Assessment Briefs.

Interior Life Protection and Ethics Principle
Because the Department’s central subject matter is the interior, often private experience of the person, its ethical commitments govern every module, practicum, and research activity it authorizes.
This principle governs curriculum design, contemplative practicum supervision, assessment of reflective work, and all research involving human participants across the Department, and stands alongside the Formation Safeguarding Principle held by the Department of Human Formation as one of the Institute’s foundational protections for the persons it forms.
Tuition Principle
Tuition for every programme is published in full above, with no undisclosed fees. Where a learner’s circumstances warrant it, the Department may offer needs-based tuition adjustment, cohort scholarships, or staged payment plans, at the discretion of the Institute’s admissions and finance offices.
Tuition figures reflect the Institute’s standard credit-based tuition model and are reviewed annually.
Final Delivery and Access Declaration
The Department of Consciousness Studies is delivered online-first to maximize access for learners regardless of geographic location, with structured cohort support, complete documentation for every module, and a clear pathway from Certificate through PhD. No learner shall be required to relocate to access any taught programme offered by this Department.
Final Structural Declaration
The Department of Consciousness Studies stands as a founding Department of Faculty I, examining the conscious subject presupposed by every other act of Human Formation across the Institute. Every award, module, and research activity documented above proceeds through the Department’s permanent structural chain:
This chain governs the Department of Consciousness Studies now and permanently, coordinated with, and answerable to, the general theory of Human Formation held by the Department of Human Formation.
