Department of
Lifelong Learning
Documentation and Academic Structure of the Department
The Department of Lifelong Learning examines education as it continues across an entire adult life — returning learners, continuing education, and adult study undertaken alongside work, family, and other obligations that traditional-age education rarely has to accommodate.
Where every other Department of Faculty V has addressed education broadly, the Department of Lifelong Learning closes the Faculty’s founding architecture by addressing the learner who does not fit the traditional-age model at all — and the real risk that adult and continuing education programmes can exploit these learners’ circumstances or blame them for barriers the programme itself built in.
This document establishes the Department’s complete academic and institutional documentation architecture across seven structural layers, closing the founding architecture of Faculty V.
Foundational Framework
Governing Field. Human Formation, examined through the discipline of Lifelong Learning — the systematic study of adult and continuing education, and the real constraints of work, family, and obligation that adult learners bring to their studies.
Central Premise. An adult returning to education is not a traditional-age student who happens to be older; they carry responsibilities and constraints a rigid, traditionally structured programme was never designed to accommodate. Where such a learner struggles or drops out, the honest first question is whether the programme’s design created the barrier, not whether the learner lacked commitment.
Foundational Theoretical Anchor. The Department operates under the Principle of Educational Equity and Intellectual Independence established by the Department of Education, and coordinates closely with the Department of Human Development (Faculty I, formation across the lifespan) and every other Department of Faculty V, applying their standards specifically to adult and continuing learners.
Programme List
The Department offers a complete academic ladder from foundational study through doctoral research.
Delivery Framework
The Department is delivered online-first, using structured cohort-based study supported by Module Specifications, Study Guides, Teaching Manuals, and Assessment Briefs for every unit, consistent with the Institute’s established production standard.
Curriculum
The BA (Honours) Lifelong Learning curriculum proceeds across four levels, numbered LL101 through LL111, following the Institute’s core pedagogical standard: scaffolded progression from structured instruction toward fully independent adult and continuing education practice.
| Level | Focus | Modules |
|---|---|---|
| Level 4 | Foundations of Lifelong Learning; the traditional–adult learner distinction; introduction to andragogy | LL101–LL104 |
| Level 5 | Continuing education programme design; barriers to adult study; ethics of flexible and non-exploitative design | LL105–LL107 |
| Level 6 | Independent lifelong learning research; capstone applied programme design study; specialization electives | LL108–LL109 |
| Level 7 (MA) | Advanced lifelong learning theory; adult learning and Human Formation; research methods; dissertation | LL110–LL111 |
Key Pedagogical Standard. Every module moves the learner from structured instruction toward the independent capacity to design continuing education that genuinely accommodates working adult learners’ real constraints — no learner exits the programme designing a rigid structure and blaming the adult learner for the barrier it created.
Research Fields and Centres
The Department maintains the following primary research fields:
Centre for Lifelong Learning
The Department’s standing research centre, coordinating cross-domain research with the Department of Education, the Department of Human Development (Faculty I), and the Department of Vocation, Purpose and Life Design (Faculty VI).
Assessment and Ethics
Assessment in the Department evaluates a learner’s competence in adult and continuing education programme design — never a reward for a rigid design that succeeds only for learners without significant outside obligations.
Because continuing education programmes have a documented history of financially exploiting non-traditional learners through predatory practices, the Department applies a dedicated integrity principle.
Award Titles
Public-Facing Department Page
The Department of Lifelong Learning is where the Institute studies education as it continues across an entire adult life — designed to genuinely accommodate the real constraints of work, family, and obligation, never to exploit them. As the Department that closes the founding architecture of Faculty V, it insists that a struggling adult learner is owed an honest look at whether the programme’s own design created the barrier.
Learners join a structured academic pathway from Certificate through PhD, moving from guided foundational study toward independent, genuinely accommodating programme design, supported at every level by the Institute’s full documentation standard: Module Specifications, Study Guides, Teaching Manuals, and Assessment Briefs.

Credit Framework
The Department applies the Institute’s standard credit framework: one credit represents approximately 10 notional learning hours, inclusive of guided instruction, independent study, adult and continuing education practicum where applicable, and assessment, with extended completion windows available in recognition of adult learners’ real schedules.
| Level | Credits (Full Level) | Notional Learning Hours |

| Level 8 (MPhil/PhD, research credit) | 240–360 | 2,400–3,600 |
Lifelong Learning Ethics Principle
Because continuing education programmes have a documented history of exploiting non-traditional learners’ circumstances, the Department’s ethical commitments govern every module, practicum, and research activity it authorizes, and close the ethics chain of Faculty V.
This principle governs curriculum design, adult and continuing education practicum, assessment design, and all research conducted across the Department, and stands as the final entry alongside the Principle of Educational Equity and Intellectual Independence (Department of Education), the Principle of Learner Data Dignity (Department of Learning Sciences), the Principle of Curricular Transparency and Inclusion (Department of Curriculum Studies), the Principle of Non-Stigmatizing Educational Support (Department of Educational Psychology), the Principle of Valid and Equitable Assessment (Department of Assessment and Evaluation), the Principle of Pedagogical Restraint in Formation Teaching (Department of Human Formation Pedagogy), and the Principle of Universal Instructional Access (Department of Instructional Design) in the complete set of ethical protections held across Faculty V.
Tuition Principle
Tuition for every programme is published in full above, with no undisclosed fees. Where a learner’s circumstances warrant it, the Department may offer needs-based tuition adjustment, cohort scholarships, or staged payment plans, at the discretion of the Institute’s admissions and finance offices.
Tuition figures reflect the Institute’s standard credit-based tuition model and are reviewed annually.
Final Delivery and Access Declaration
The Department of Lifelong Learning is delivered online-first to maximize access for learners regardless of geographic location, with structured cohort support, flexible pacing, complete documentation for every module, and a clear pathway from Certificate through PhD. No learner shall be required to relocate to access any taught programme offered by this Department.
Final Structural Declaration
The Department of Lifelong Learning stands as the final founding Department of Faculty V, holding the Faculty’s commitment to education to the adult learner whose life was never built around a traditional academic calendar. Every award, module, and research activity documented above proceeds through the Department’s permanent structural chain:
This chain governs the Department of Lifelong Learning now and permanently, coordinated with, and answerable to, the Principle of Educational Equity and Intellectual Independence held by the Department of Education. With this Department, the complete founding architecture of Faculty V — eight Departments, eight ethics principles, one governing chain — stands documented in full.
