Section I

Documentation and Academic Structure of the Department

The Department of Leadership Studies examines the general theory and practice of leadership — the exercise of influence and authority in service of those led, studied across organizational, public, and institutional contexts.

As the founding Department of Faculty VI, Leadership Studies establishes the general theory that its seven sibling Departments — Organizational Development, Governance and Stewardship, Change and Transformation Leadership, Human Capacity Development, Executive and Public Leadership, Vocation, Purpose and Life Design, and Institutional Development — each specialize further.

This document establishes the Department’s complete academic and institutional documentation architecture across seven structural layers.

Field → Department → Programme → Curriculum → Module → Assessment → Research → Formation Practice → Award → Graduate

Stage One · Foundational Framework

Section II

Foundational Framework

Governing Field. Human Formation, examined through the discipline of Leadership Studies — the systematic study of influence, authority, and the exercise of power in service of the genuine good of those led.

Central Premise. Leadership is a form of influence, and influence exercised for the leader’s own advancement rather than the good of those affected by it is not leadership but self-serving power wearing leadership’s title. A leader is accountable first to the people they lead, not only to whoever appointed them.

Foundational Theoretical Anchor. The Department is the founding Department of Faculty VI, coordinating closely with its sibling Departments across organizational, institutional, and public leadership contexts, with the Theory of Symbolic Leadership held within the Symbolic Human Formation Canon (Faculty VIII), and with the Department of Behavioural Studies’ Principle of Consented Influence (Faculty III), which this Department extends into leadership practice specifically.

A LEADER WHO SERVES ONLY THOSE ABOVE THEM HAS NOT YET LEARNED WHO THEY ARE ACCOUNTABLE TO.

Stage Two · Programme List

Section III

Programme List

The Department offers a complete academic ladder from foundational study through doctoral research.

Certificate in Leadership Studies
Diploma in Leadership Studies
BA (Honours) Leadership Studies
Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership Studies
Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership Studies
MA Leadership Studies
MRes Leadership Studies
MPhil Leadership Studies
PhD Leadership Studies

Stage Three · Delivery Framework

Section IV

Delivery Framework

The Department is delivered online-first, using structured cohort-based study supported by Module Specifications, Study Guides, Teaching Manuals, and Assessment Briefs for every unit, consistent with the Institute’s established production standard.

Structured Instruction
Levels 4–5 establish foundational vocabulary and theory concerning influence, authority, and accountability in leadership.

Scaffolded Independence
Levels 6–7 progressively require independent leadership research and applied practice under supervision.

Cohort-Based Study
Learners progress in structured cohorts, supporting collaborative critique of leadership practice against service-oriented standards.

Distance and Blended Access
All programmes are available by distance; the Professional Practice Certificate includes supervised practicum in leadership facilitation and coaching.

Stage Four · Curriculum

Section V

Curriculum

The BA (Honours) Leadership Studies curriculum proceeds across four levels, numbered LEA101 through LEA111, following the Institute’s core pedagogical standard: scaffolded progression from structured instruction toward fully independent, service-oriented leadership practice.

Level Focus Modules
Level 4 Foundations of Leadership Studies; the service–self-advancement distinction; introduction to theories of influence and authority LEA101–LEA104
Level 5 Comparative leadership traditions; accountability structures; ethics of institutional power LEA105–LEA107
Level 6 Independent leadership research; capstone applied leadership case study; specialization electives LEA108–LEA109
Level 7 (MA) Advanced leadership theory; leadership and Human Formation; research methods; dissertation LEA110–LEA111

Key Pedagogical Standard. Every module moves the learner from structured instruction toward the independent capacity to exercise leadership accountable to those it affects, not only to institutional superiors — no learner exits the programme treating followers as instruments for their own advancement.

Stage Five · Research Fields and Centres

Section VI

Research Fields and Centres

The Department maintains the following primary research fields:

Theories of Influence, Authority, and Power
Accountability Structures in Leadership
Leadership Studies and Symbolic Leadership (joint with Faculty VIII)
Leadership Studies and Consented Influence (joint with Faculty III, Department of Behavioural Studies)
Comparative Leadership Traditions Across Cultures
Leadership and Institutional Culture (joint with Department of Organizational Development)
Servant and Stewardship Leadership Models
Leadership Failure and Its Warning Signs

Centre for Leadership Studies

The Department’s standing research centre, coordinating cross-domain research with the Department of Behavioural Studies (Faculty III), the Department of Symbolic Human Formation and Comparative Symbolic Systems (Faculty VIII), and its own seven sibling Departments within Faculty VI.

Stage Six · Assessment and Ethics

Section VII

Assessment and Ethics

Assessment in the Department evaluates a learner’s competence in leadership theory and their demonstrated capacity for accountable, service-oriented practice — never a reward for charisma or influence exercised without regard for the good of those affected.

Because leadership training confers real influence over other people’s working lives and futures, the Department applies a dedicated integrity principle governing that power, establishing the founding ethics principle for Faculty VI as a whole.

THE PRINCIPLE OF SERVICE-ORIENTED LEADERSHIP: no leadership method taught, practised, or assessed within this Department shall treat those led as instruments for the leader’s own advancement. Every graduate of this Department is trained to hold themselves accountable first to the people their leadership affects, and to recognize the difference between influence exercised in service of others and power exercised for oneself.

Section XXVI

Leadership Ethics Principle

Because leadership training confers real influence over other people’s working lives and futures, the Department’s ethical commitments govern every module, practicum, and research activity it authorizes, and establish the founding ethics principle for Faculty VI as a whole.

THE PRINCIPLE OF SERVICE-ORIENTED LEADERSHIP (restated as governing Department ethic): this Department trains leaders accountable to the people their leadership affects, never leaders who treat followers as instruments toward their own advancement. Influence exercised for self rather than for those served is not leadership, whatever title accompanies it.

This principle governs curriculum design, leadership facilitation practicum, assessment design, and all research conducted across the Department, and stands as the founding ethics principle of Faculty VI, to be cross-referenced by the Faculty’s remaining seven Departments as they are documented.

Section XXVII

Tuition Principle

Tuition for every programme is published in full above, with no undisclosed fees. Where a learner’s circumstances warrant it, the Department may offer needs-based tuition adjustment, cohort scholarships, or staged payment plans, at the discretion of the Institute’s admissions and finance offices.

Tuition figures reflect the Institute’s standard credit-based tuition model and are reviewed annually.

Section XXVIII

Final Delivery and Access Declaration

The Department of Leadership Studies is delivered online-first to maximize access for learners regardless of geographic location, with structured cohort support, complete documentation for every module, and a clear pathway from Certificate through PhD. No learner shall be required to relocate to access any taught programme offered by this Department.

Section XXIX

Final Structural Declaration

The Department of Leadership Studies stands as the founding Department of Faculty VI, holding the general theory of influence and authority exercised in service of those led, from which its seven sibling Departments each specialize further. Every award, module, and research activity documented above proceeds through the Department’s permanent structural chain:

Field → Department → Programme → Curriculum → Module → Assessment → Research → Formation Practice → Award → Graduate

This chain governs the Department of Leadership Studies now and permanently, and this document opens the documentation architecture of Faculty VI, whose remaining seven Departments shall each build upon and cross-reference the Principle of Service-Oriented Leadership established here.
