Section I

Documentation and Academic Structure of the Department

The Department of Communication Studies examines the process of human communication itself — interpersonal, organizational, and public communication, and the conditions under which genuine mutual understanding is actually achieved — distinct from the Department of Media and Public Communication, which examines mass media channels specifically, and the Department of Language and Linguistic Studies, which examines language’s structure.

Communication training that optimizes only for producing a predetermined response, regardless of whether genuine understanding was achieved, has trained persuasion engineering, not communication. This Department studies communication as a genuinely two-way process.

This document establishes the Department’s complete academic and institutional documentation architecture across seven structural layers.

Field → Department → Programme → Curriculum → Module → Assessment → Research → Formation Practice → Award → Graduate

Stage One · Foundational Framework

Section II

Foundational Framework

Governing Field. Human Formation, examined through the discipline of Communication Studies — the systematic study of interpersonal, organizational, and public communication, and the conditions under which genuine mutual understanding is achieved between communicating parties.

Central Premise. Communication that succeeds only in producing a predetermined response, without regard for whether the other party genuinely understood or freely agreed, has achieved persuasion, not communication. Genuine communicative competence includes the capacity to know whether real understanding was reached, not only whether the desired outcome occurred.

Foundational Theoretical Anchor. The Department operates under the Principle of Linguistic Equity established by the Department of Language and Linguistic Studies, and coordinates closely with the Department of Symbolic Systems and Semiotics (Faculty VIII, Principle of Sign System Transparency) and the Department of Behavioural Studies (Faculty III, Principle of Consented Influence), applying both Departments’ standards to communicative practice specifically.

A MESSAGE THAT PRODUCES THE DESIRED RESPONSE WITHOUT PRODUCING UNDERSTANDING HAS ACHIEVED PERSUASION, NOT COMMUNICATION.

Stage Two · Programme List

Section III

Diploma in Communication Studies
BA (Honours) Communication Studies
Postgraduate Certificate in Communication Studies
Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies
MA Communication Studies
MRes Communication Studies
MPhil Communication Studies
PhD Communication Studies
Professional Practice Certificate in Communication Facilitation and Training

Stage Three · Delivery Framework

Section IV

Delivery Framework

The Department is delivered online-first, using structured cohort-based study supported by Module Specifications, Study Guides, Teaching Manuals, and Assessment Briefs for every unit, consistent with the Institute’s established production standard.

Structured Instruction
Levels 4–5 establish foundational vocabulary and theory concerning communicative process, feedback, and genuine mutual understanding.

Scaffolded Independence
Levels 6–7 progressively require independent communication research and applied dialogic practice.

Cohort-Based Study
Learners progress in structured cohorts, supporting collaborative review of communication practice against dialogic-integrity standards.

Distance and Blended Access
All programmes are available by distance; the Professional Practice Certificate includes supervised practicum in communication facilitation and training.

Stage Four · Curriculum

Section V

Curriculum

The BA (Honours) Communication Studies curriculum proceeds across four levels, numbered COM101 through COM111, following the Institute’s core pedagogical standard: scaffolded progression from structured instruction toward fully independent, dialogically genuine communicative practice.

Level Focus Modules
Level 4 Foundations of Communication Studies; the persuasion–understanding distinction; introduction to communicative process theory COM101–COM104
Level 5 Interpersonal and organizational communication; feedback and mutual understanding; ethics of persuasive communication COM105–COM107
Level 6 Independent communication research; capstone applied dialogic study; specialization electives COM108–COM109
Level 7 (MA) Advanced communication theory; communication and Human Formation; research methods; dissertation COM110–COM111

Key Pedagogical Standard. Every module moves the learner from structured instruction toward the independent capacity to verify whether genuine understanding, not only compliance, has been achieved — no learner exits the programme measuring communicative success solely by whether the audience did what was intended.

Stage Five · Research Fields and Centres

Section VI

Research Fields and Centres

The Department maintains the following primary research fields:

Interpersonal and Organizational Communication
Feedback and Mutual Understanding
Communication Studies and Symbolic Systems and Semiotics (joint with Department of Symbolic Systems and Semiotics)
Communication Studies and Behavioural Studies (joint with Faculty III, Principle of Consented Influence)
Comparative Communicative Traditions Across Cultures
Crisis and Conflict Communication
Communication Studies and Media and Public Communication (joint with Department of Media and Public Communication)
Communicative Competence and Miscommunication Repair

Centre for Communication Studies

The Department’s standing research centre, coordinating cross-domain research with the Department of Language and Linguistic Studies, the Department of Symbolic Systems and Semiotics, and the Department of Behavioural Studies (Faculty III).

Stage Six · Assessment and Ethics

Section VII

Assessment and Ethics

Assessment in the Department evaluates a learner’s competence in communicative process theory and their demonstrated capacity to verify genuine understanding — never a reward for a communication strategy that achieves compliance without regard for whether it was actually understood or freely agreed to.

Because communication training confers real capacity to influence others’ decisions, the Department applies a dedicated integrity principle.

THE PRINCIPLE OF DIALOGIC INTEGRITY: no communication method taught or practised within this Department shall be evaluated solely by whether it produced a desired response. This Department trains communicators to verify genuine mutual understanding as a condition of communicative success, not an optional extra to it.

Public-Facing Department Page

The Department of Communication Studies is where the Institute studies communication as a genuinely two-way process — measuring success by mutual understanding achieved, never by compliance produced without it. As a sibling Department of Faculty VIII, it trains communicators who verify understanding rather than merely engineering a desired response.

Learners join a structured academic pathway from Certificate through PhD, moving from guided foundational study toward independent, dialogically genuine communication practice, supported at every level by the Institute’s full documentation standard: Module Specifications, Study Guides, Teaching Manuals, and Assessment Briefs.

Section XXVI

Dialogic Integrity Ethics Principle

Because communication training confers real capacity to influence others’ decisions, the Department’s ethical commitments govern every module, practicum, and research activity it authorizes.

THE PRINCIPLE OF DIALOGIC INTEGRITY (restated as governing Department ethic): this Department trains communicators who seek genuine understanding, never communicators who treat an audience’s compliance as sufficient proof of success. Every communication strategy taught here is judged first by whether it was honestly understood.

This principle governs curriculum design, communication facilitation practicum, assessment design, and all research conducted across the Department, and stands alongside the Principle of Linguistic Equity (Department of Language and Linguistic Studies), the Principle of Charitable Interpretation (Department of Meaning and Interpretation Studies), and the Principle of Sign System Transparency (Department of Symbolic Systems and Semiotics) as the fourth ethics principle documented within Faculty VIII.

Section XXVII

Tuition Principle

Tuition for every programme is published in full above, with no undisclosed fees. Where a learner’s circumstances warrant it, the Department may offer needs-based tuition adjustment, cohort scholarships, or staged payment plans, at the discretion of the Institute’s admissions and finance offices.

Tuition figures reflect the Institute’s standard credit-based tuition model and are reviewed annually.

Section XXVIII

Final Delivery and Access Declaration

The Department of Communication Studies is delivered online-first to maximize access for learners regardless of geographic location, with structured cohort support, complete documentation for every module, and a clear pathway from Certificate through PhD. No learner shall be required to relocate to access any taught programme offered by this Department.

Section XXIX

Final Structural Declaration

The Department of Communication Studies stands as a sibling Department of Faculty VIII, holding communication to the standard of genuine mutual understanding rather than mere compliance. Every award, module, and research activity documented above proceeds through the Department’s permanent structural chain:

Field → Department → Programme → Curriculum → Module → Assessment → Research → Formation Practice → Award → Graduate

This chain governs the Department of Communication Studies now and permanently, coordinated with, and answerable to, the Principle of Linguistic Equity held by the Department of Language and Linguistic Studies.
