The Code

of Professional and Ethical Practice
Professional and Ethical Authority · First Ratified Edition · July 2026

Section I

Preamble

The Code of Professional and Ethical Practice is Canon Volume X: the professional and ethical authority of Symbolic Human Formation. It establishes the binding duties of every scholar, educator, researcher, consultant, and practitioner operating under a CYTOG Symbolic Human Formation credential or professional pathway.

Holding a CYTOG Symbolic Human Formation credential or professional pathway is conditional on continued compliance with this Code. It is not a title held independently of conduct.

Section II

Article 1 — Scope and Application

1.1 — This Code binds every person who teaches, researches, publishes, or practises under the name of Symbolic Human Formation, any of its Faculties or Departments, or any of its recognized professional pathways.

1.2 — This Code applies whether the person’s relationship to CYTOG is as faculty, researcher, student, consultant, or credentialed practitioner, and whether the work in question is paid or unpaid, published or unpublished.

Section III

Article 2 — Academic Integrity

2.1 — Every claim of fact, finding, or interpretation shall be honestly sourced and honestly represented.

2.2 — Every research finding shall name the methodology that produced it and disclose any departure from that methodology’s standard procedure.

2.3 — Data, sources, and interpretive reasoning shall be available for review by the relevant Departmental Committee or Research Council on request.

2.4 — Plagiarism, fabrication, and misrepresentation of another’s work as one’s own are prohibited without exception.

Section IV

Article 3 — Professional Conduct

3.1 — Practitioners shall represent only the competence and credentials they actually hold, and shall refer matters outside their competence to the appropriate Faculty, Department, or professional pathway.

3.2 — Practitioners shall treat colleagues, students, and clients with professional courtesy; disagreements shall be conducted through scholarly channels rather than public disparagement.

Section V

Article 4 — Research Ethics

4.1 — All research shall comply with the Research Ethics standards of Canon Volume V, Part IV, including informed consent, community consultation, and non-extraction of symbolic or ritual material from living communities without their knowledge.

4.2 — Any research design raising a question of consent, dignity, or cultural sensitivity shall be routed to the Ethics Committee before data collection begins.

Section VI

Article 5 — Teaching Ethics

5.1 — Teaching under Symbolic Human Formation Pedagogy shall form students’ capacity for symbolic literacy and critical judgment; it shall not indoctrinate students into the instructor’s personal conclusions about contested symbolic or religious traditions.

5.2 — Instructors shall respect a student’s own convictions and traditions when introducing comparative or critical material, and shall distinguish clearly between academic study of a tradition and endorsement or rejection of it.

5.3 — Assessment of students shall evaluate demonstrated understanding and analytical skill, not agreement with the instructor’s own interpretive conclusions.

Section VII

Article 6 — Institutional Responsibility

6.1 — Practitioners and faculty shall represent the CYTOG HUMAN FORMATION AND LEARNING’s accreditation status, institutional standing, and developmental stage accurately in all public and professional communication.

6.2 — Use of CYTOG’s name, seals, and credentials shall be limited to those formally authorized to hold them.

Section VIII

Article 7 — Public Engagement

7.1 — When speaking publicly on specialized symbolic systems studied under Comparative Symbolic Systems (astrology, tarot, numerology, and related traditions), practitioners shall state clearly that academic study of a system does not constitute institutional endorsement of its predictive or supernatural claims.

7.2 — Public commentary on behalf of CYTOG shall distinguish clearly between the practitioner’s personal opinion and the Institute’s ratified position, where one exists.

Section IX

Article 8 — Cultural Respect

8.1 — No tradition’s symbols shall be studied, published, or applied in professional consulting without acknowledgement of that tradition’s own account of its symbols.

8.2 — Comparative work shall compare; it shall not rank traditions or adjudicate between their truth-claims.

Section X

Article 9 — Intellectual Property

9.1 — The CYTOG Formation Analysis Matrix, the CYTOG Symbolic Taxonomy, and all other named CYTOG proprietary instruments and frameworks remain the intellectual property of the Institute; use in published research shall cite them by their canonical name.

9.2 — Attribution shall be given accurately for all external sources, traditions, and prior scholarship drawn upon, including traditions from which a symbol or practice originates.

Section XI

Article 10 — Scholarly Independence

10.1 — Practitioners and researchers shall be free to pursue findings wherever honest inquiry leads, within the bounds of the Constitutional Assumptions and Principles; no institutional authority shall pressure a researcher toward a predetermined conclusion.

10.2 — A finding that appears to conflict with a Constitutional Assumption shall be submitted for review under the amendment procedure rather than suppressed or independently overridden.

Section XII

Article 11 — Professional Pathway-Specific Provisions

11.1 — The Narrative Therapist pathway remains under separate professional and regulatory review. No practitioner may offer services under that title, or imply that a CYTOG credential qualifies them to practise narrative therapy, until that review formally concludes.

11.2 — Each recognized professional pathway is bound by the practice guidance given for it in the Handbook, in addition to the general provisions of this Code.

Section XIII

Article 12 — Enforcement and Review

12.1 — The Ethics Committee named in the domain Governance System receives, reviews, and adjudicates complaints of non-compliance with this Code.

12.2 — Responses to a substantiated complaint may include, in order of severity: a private reminder, a formal written warning, suspension of professional pathway recognition, or referral to the Academic Senate for further action.

12.3 — A practitioner subject to a complaint shall be informed of its substance and given opportunity to respond before any sanction is applied.

Section XIV

Ratification

This Code consolidates and supersedes any prior informal ethical guidance produced across the domain’s developmental record. It stands as the first ratified edition of Canon Volume X, binding on every person practising Symbolic Human Formation under the CYTOG HUMAN FORMATION AND LEARNING.
